A balikbayan box carries more than household goods and gifts. It often represents months of preparation and the trust of a Filipino family separated by distance.

Before handing over your box, take a few minutes to verify who will handle it abroad and which company will receive and process it in the Philippines.

1. Ask for the companies’ complete names

Request the exact business name of:

• The foreign agent or consolidator accepting your box
• Its Philippine freight-forwarding or deconsolidation partner

Do not rely only on a social-media page, nickname or representative’s first name. You need the official company names to compare them with government records.

2. Check the current DTI directory

3. Review the Customs requirements

According to the Bureau of Customs, duty- and tax-free balikbayan boxes must contain personal or household effects, must not be intended for sale, and must remain within the applicable value and frequency limits.

4. Declare the contents honestly

Prepare a detailed packing list showing the items and their corresponding values. Keep invoices or receipts when available.

Do not agree to incorrectly describe goods or hide commercial quantities. Accurate declarations help reduce customs problems and protect the sender if questions arise.

5. Keep your shipment records

Before the box leaves your possession, save copies or photos of:

• Your completed packing list
• Sender and recipient information
• Receipt or invoice
• Tracking or reference number
• The sealed box and its labels

6. Check uncertain items before packing
